Caring for the people who care

12 April 2021 12 April 2021 | Support

As part of Brain Tumour Awareness Month this year, Brain Tumour Support set up a new initiative which it hopes will become an annual project.

During March specially chosen and assembled packages were put together to send out to NHS neurological teams and Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs) who Brain Tumour Support work closely with to provide ongoing care to brain tumour patients and their families.

Thanks to the generous sponsorship of homebuilder Miller Homes ‘care boxes’ were assembled containing a range of self-care items such as handmade soap, lotions and lip care, and selected consumable treats. These went out to individual CNSs who have worked with the charity over a number of years and who have faced, like all NHS staff, extra pressures throughout the period of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Brain Tumour Support ‘treat boxes’ were also put together for sharing by the neuro teams who work closely with the charity. Kindly sponsored by Thornbury-based Colmers HR and Bristol-based Your People Partners, each box was filled with a selection of biscuits and edible goodies.

Charity volunteers assisted in assembling and packing all the boxes so that they could all be sent out for delivery after Easter.

Tina Mitchell-Skinner, CEO and Founder of Brain Tumour Support was delighted to be able to make this gesture of support.

She said: “We see these little packages as ‘hugs in a box’ and I am so grateful for the sponsorship support that we have received to enable us to send them out.

I continue to be overwhelmed by the wonderful work the hospital neuro teams have carried out during this pandemic. I am also proud and hugely thankful that Brain Tumour Support has survived this pandemic and been able to adapt our support services, so these care boxes are significant in their dual meaning. They represent not only a mark of our existence to continue our work, but most importantly a huge thank you to all the NHS staff who work with the charity to support families affected by a brain tumour.

We hope the boxes will succeed in bringing a smile to quite a few faces, and we are looking forward to building on this initiative to make it an annual reminder that we care about the people who care.”
