Making the right choices for you
All NHS patients have the right to dignity, respect and privacy. It can sometimes be difficult to understand what you are entitled to, so here are some key rights that may be helpful to know.
Information
You have the right to receive clear information about your care and treatment, including risks, benefits and alternatives, so you can make informed choices.
Second opinion
You have the right to request a second opinion about your diagnosis or treatment plan. If you are considering this, it may help to raise it as early as possible so your care is not delayed.
Research and clinical trials
You may be asked to take part in research or a clinical trial. You have the right to say no, and your decision should not affect the quality of your care.
Medical records
You are entitled to access your medical records if you wish to do so.
Appointments and waiting times
You have the right to be seen as close as possible to your appointment time. Delays can happen, but you should be given a clear explanation if your appointment is significantly delayed.
Religious and cultural beliefs
You are entitled to have your religious and cultural beliefs respected, including support with dietary needs, interpreters, privacy preferences, and visits from religious representatives where requested.
