Elaine’s story: finding strength through support and change

When Elaine Barry was diagnosed with a high-grade brain tumour in 2023, her first thoughts were not only about treatment. She was also thinking about her family and how her diagnosis would affect her and her partner’s five sons.

“I felt absolutely broken at the thought of having to ring the boys and tell them, not knowing how they would cope.”

Elaine was supported by Amy Young, one of Brain Tumour Support’s Support Professionals. For Amy, supporting someone after a brain tumour diagnosis is not about offering the same response to everyone. It is about listening, understanding what is needed in that moment, and adapting as life changes.

As Elaine’s journey continued through surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, those changes kept coming. Her driving licence was revoked, she had to leave her job as a store manager, and even going to the gym, one of her favourite hobbies, was no longer possible for a time.

Over time, Elaine’s circumstances changed again. Three years on, she has adapted to her new life with an optimistic outlook. She is back at the gym, walking her dogs, has completed a twenty-mile bike ride raising money for Brain Tumour Support, and has taken on a part-time role.

But Elaine is honest that the difficult days have not disappeared.

“I am only human, I still have my bad days, the days where it feels hard. I am grateful to have a good support system around me, because I know how quickly things can change in this journey.”

That is why having space to talk has mattered so much. For Elaine, connecting with someone who understands, without judgement, has helped her process what she is going through and feel less alone.

“I encourage anyone to reach out for support. The impact of connecting with someone, and having a space to talk is so powerful. It doesn’t matter what you say, there is never any judgement. But once you’ve got it off your chest, you feel so much better.”
