Payroll Giving

What is Payroll Giving?

Payroll Giving, also known as Give As You Earn, is a scheme that allows employees to donate to charity directly from their salary. It is one of the simplest, most tax-efficient ways to give to charity, allowing employees to donate to a charity of their choice. Donations are taken after National Insurance but before tax, so the donations are cheaper for employees. For example, if an employee pays 20% tax, then a donation of £5 per month would actually cost them £4. And if they pay 40% tax it will cost them £3.

Benefits for employers

There are numerous advantages to offering a Payroll Giving scheme for your employees, regardless of your company’s size. Implementing Payroll Giving can enhance your company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) profile and potentially earn you a Payroll Giving Quality Mark Award, recognising businesses that offer the scheme.

Setting up Payroll Giving is straightforward, with no cost to the employer or the need for new payroll software. Once established, employees can immediately sign up and donate. Each pay day, donations are deducted directly from an employee’s gross salary and forwarded to your chosen Payroll Giving Agency.

Benefits for employees

Payroll Giving offers employees an easy, convenient, and tax-efficient way to support charities of their choice. Donations are automatically deducted from gross salary payments, making it hassle-free. Employees have the flexibility to adjust or cancel donations at any time through their payroll department, and donations cease automatically upon leaving the company or retiring. Payroll Giving is simple to set up and there are many providers who offer this service. We recommend Charities Trust and you can find out more information here.
