A Car and Bike Show specially organised by charity supporters has raised a wonderful £2,760 for Brain Tumour SupportThe event on Sunday 25 July was organised by Steve and Diane Bassett and was held in North Petherwin, near Launceston, Cornwall. Despite warnings of bad weather the day turned out to be perfect and the show was a great success for both exhibitors and visitors alike.
Diane explained how the event came about: “We have been members of the SW Cobra Car Club for several years and because there hadn’t been any local car shows for almost two years and because Steve and our family have benefited so much from the support given by this wonderful charity, we decided to hold a car and bike show to raise money for Brain Tumour Support.”
They were delighted by the response they had to their call for exhibitors. “We aimed to get a range of old and new cars and bikes here to suit all tastes and the show was oversubscribed. As well as many individuals who brought their pride and joy, we were supported by the SW Cobra Club, The Brown Monkey Mini Club and the Tamar Valley Historic Car Club.”
Generous help was also given with donations, loans of equipment or raffle prizes from many local organisations, companies and individuals including Jo Downs, Martin Ashley, Craig Chapman, Roddas, Eagle Plant Hire, Alder Vineyard, Andrew Smeeth, Alverton Manor, Blake Poultry, Cornish Moo, North Petherwin Parish Hall, South West Lakes Trust, Warrens and Tesco.
Volunteers from Brain Tumour Support attended the event and ran a stall selling charity merchandise, as well as jewellery and crafts from the Brain Tumour Support Crafters, a group of friends in Devon and Cornwall who make and sell a range of handmade goods to benefit the charity.
After the event, Ellen Yates, who also volunteers for the regular regional support groups said “This was the first fundraising event which the Cornwall and Devon Support Groups have been involved in since the first lockdown last year, so that made it even more significant as members from both groups were present. Seeing familiar faces in person and meeting some people who I had only previously met on Zoom sessions or spoken to in messages was priceless. As well as raising funds for BTS we also helped to raise awareness of the charity which is really important.”
David Haq, the Support Professional for Devon and Cornwall was also delighted to be there and thanked everyone for making it such a success.
“The day had a carnival feel about it, and it was clear that everyone who came along to support the event had as much fun as I did. Steve and Diane both worked extremely hard to make it happen, and to ensure that everything worked like clockwork. It was also lovely to hear from people attending how the support we give is so important to them, and the incredible total raised on the day will certainly help us to be there for many more families.”
