Bridget Dowty

Communications Lead

I have been involved with Brain Tumour Support for over twelve years and I feel privileged to have been part of the amazing development of the charity. As a brain tumour survivor myself, my own experience of a low grade diagnosis in 2002, and the ups and downs of surgeries and complications over the next two years, had a profound impact on me. I also felt very lucky in eventually making a full recovery. So when I heard about a local support group I joined, in the hope that I could, if nothing else, give some encouragement and positivity to others facing a similar situation. Through those group meetings I saw the importance of connecting with others and the extraordinary power of shared experience.

My working life has always been creative. After a degree in Visual Communication, I followed a freelance career in illustration and design. So when, in 2012, the opportunity came up to volunteer for Hammer Out, helping on the charity’s comms and website, it was a perfect way to combine my creative skills with a cause about which I had become passionate. I gradually became more involved, including on the rebrand from Hammer Out to Brain Tumour Support in 2013, and joined the Senior Leadership Team as Communications Lead in 2017.

I continue to be moved and inspired by the people we support every day, and energised by the shared passion and huge care that runs through our small and dedicated team.
