Adam and Ruth’s story
From life-saving surgery to heartfelt fundraising
Following the diagnosis in October last year of a schwannoma tumour, Adam Coates was told he likely had just two months to live unless he underwent a risky operation, which in itself was a threat to his life. He didn’t have a real choice but admits, “I didn’t think I was going to come off the operating table.”
Thanks to an expert team at Royal Stoke Hospital the 23-hour operation was successful and Adam recalls “When I woke up in the recovery room, my consultant said that my wife Ruth was on the phone. I gave him a thumbs up and told him to tell her everything is OK.”
Recovery from such a shocking diagnosis and high-risk surgery was difficult for the whole family and for Adam and Ruth having our specialist support at their side from early on has been crucial.
“Brain Tumour Support got involved and got everything sorted for my discharge from the hospital. They arranged a care package and gave me all the proper information, set up the physio for me, helped get the equipment and gave me all the right contacts I may have needed. Without them, I would have struggled.”
Adam and Ruth wanted to give something back and organised a fundraising karaoke event, hosted at their local pub and with special guest Championship boxer, Nathan Heaney. The family night was full of fun and raised an amazing £4,652. An incredible ‘thank you’ for the support that they so value.
