Changes in behaviour and thinking may occur as a result of the tumour at some point in the journey. These may include mild memory loss, mood swings, or intense emotional outbursts. This can be challenging for the person with the brain tumour and for the people close to them. It is therefore important to embrace offers of support.
Fatigue is one of the most common side effects of brain tumours and their treatment the body as their body’s energy levels are being used to fight off the tumour, or to recover from treatment. It can affect everyone differently. Some may not experience it at all or it may fluctuate throughout the day, or feel different from one day to the next
Though fatigue has no cure, it is important to talk to your healthcare team about fatigue that is having a negative impact on your life.
Brain Tumour Support offers advice on fatigue and runs information sessions on the topic. It can offer one-to-one support as well as monthly online support sessions that enable you to meet with others, share information and access reciprocal support.
Depending upon the location of the tumour, some people with brain tumours experience speech and language challenges, including difficulty speaking, finding the right words, or pausing or slurred speech. This may result in feelings of frustration and anxiety. Your GP or oncology team will advise on appropriate treatment.
Again, depending upon the location of the tumour, some people may experience hearing loss. Your GP or oncology team will advise on appropriate treatment, including the possibility of hearing aids.
You may also wish to consider obtaining a card, or a badge that will inform others that you have sight or hearing issues. This visually impaired or hearing loss awareness card enables you to communicate your disability quickly to those around you, helping to eliminate stress and ensuring people know how best to assist you. The cards are available to purchase online.
