Lisa’s story

Low grade , Patient stories

In 2006, at just 26 years old, Lisa’s life changed forever. She was diagnosed with an inoperable meningioma brain tumour – a moment that marked the beginning of a long and complex journey. Here we tell Lisa’s story and how Brain Tumour Support has helped her navigate a complex set of challenges with her young family.

Her first treatment, gamma knife radiotherapy, didn’t work. Years later, doctors performed a debulking surgery, but less than 5% of the tumour could be removed. The surgery left Lisa unable to walk, and doctors told her she might never walk again.

But Lisa defied the odds.

Not only did she regain mobility, but her tumour remained stable for nearly a decade. She was also told she could never have children due to the tumour’s progesterone receptiveness – yet today, she’s a proud mum to her miracle daughter, Ruby, now nine years old.

In 2024, Lisa received devastating news: her tumour had started growing again, likely linked to perimenopause. The growth had been slow but steady since 2020. She is now being closely monitored. Many of the emotions and fears from that initial diagnosis have returned.

“When I was first diagnosed, I wasn’t offered any counselling or guidance. It was overwhelming and lonely. And when I learned my tumour was growing again, I faced a whole new set of emotional challenges — not just for me, but for Ruby too.”

That’s when Brain Tumour Support stepped in.

Over the past six months, Lisa has been receiving counselling from Jane, one of the charity’s specialist counsellors. The support has been life-changing.

“My counsellor Jane has been absolutely invaluable. It’s been a safe space to talk, with someone who truly understands. It’s transformed my mindset and my relationship with Ruby.”
