Martyn’s story
Back in 2016, Martyn’s life changed overnight and his brain tumour diagnosis took a devastating physical and emotional toll on him and his family. He told us how the support he has received has helped him to navigate big life changes and face ongoing challenges.
I was happily married with three young children and busy with my own property renovation business.
Healthwise too, nothing seemed wrong. Then, I had a massive seizure in my sleep.
I went to hospital following the seizure and was diagnosed with a grade 1 meningioma. The tumour was very big, in the frontal lobe area, and I was told it had probably been growing for 15 years.
I’ve had two neuro surgeries, craniotomies, to remove the tumour and had further seizures so was then diagnosed with epilepsy.
I lost my business, driving licence, went through a divorce, moved out of the family home. Being away from my family and young children has been very tough, with the whole family impacted. It was a very scary time, and anxiety and depression are now ongoing issues.
I was referred to Brain Tumour Support by my neuro-psychologist and assigned to my local Support Professional, Gavin, who offers me regular one-to-one support. Together we talk about wellbeing and strategies for coping.
Having Gav involved has given me the opportunity to talk to someone who shows understanding and I feel at ease with talking too about my diagnosis without fear of judgement.
This has been particularly important recently as my tumour has started to grow again and I may now need radiotherapy.
Having someone who is a constant and knows your story helps put you at ease and gives continuity. This gives me the opportunity to talk when I need it. I’m thankful for Brain Tumour Support as I have the comfort of knowing emotional support is always there.
