Ellen was diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma in 2015 and since then has made a massive contribution in her volunteering role within Brain Tumour Support.
Over the past two years she has been actively involved with the Zoom Friendship Groups for the Devon and Cornwall areas as well as contributing towards the Shropshire, and Dorset & Hampshire groups. Ellen now facilitates fortnightly sessions for Devon and Cornwall, providing valuable support and friendship to individuals experiencing the challenges of a brain tumour diagnosis
Ellen’s passion and dedication for volunteering is unstoppable! As well as being a support volunteer she plays a key role in organising and hosting fundraising events including online themed quizzes, competitions and raffles, and activities for key charity campaigns including BTS’s annual ‘Sparkle Up Your Day’.
As a passionate crafter, Ellen also runs her craft groups ‘Maid in Kernow’ and ‘Brain Tumour Support Crafters’ and makes bespoke crochet items that are sold to raise funds for BTS. Through these groups and her Champion Fund, Ellen and her friends have raised over £6,000 for Brain Tumour Support as well as giving a huge amount of pleasure through the wonderful crafts.
Ellen is constantly active using social media to raise awareness of brain tumours and promote BTS’s work. Always happy to support her peers and offer encouragement to everyone that she can, Ellen is a very dedicated volunteer and her commitment to the charity makes a real difference to the people she supports.
I feel that being a volunteer also gives me a purpose, a sense of independence and a feeling that I may just make a difference to someone.
June 1st-7th is Volunteers’ Week – a time to say a big thank you to all our wonderful volunteers.
