‘Medical Mysteries’ (working title) will follow the journeys of people who have suffered from or are in the process of trying to diagnose or treat a ‘medical mystery’.
Its aim is to raise awareness about lesser known conditions, showcase revolutionary new treatments, and also show in detail how the medical process works. – We can sometimes be left wondering why a GP has taken a certain course of action, so this offers the opportunity to follow a doctor’s thought process from the initial consultation to treatment and hopefully cure.
The producers are looking for current or previous cases that have proven difficult to diagnose – this may be due to their rarity or due to an unusual presentation. A key aspect is how a consultant or GP has interpreted the symptoms and any test results.
There are three types of story that will feature:
1. Testimonials – cases that have been recently solved that we can re-tell from the perspective of the specialist and the patient
2. Active cases – where a patient is in the process of being diagnosed or being treated by a specialist
3. Referrals – where the programme profiles a case and refers the contributor to a specialist for a consultation
